SSIP (Safety Schemes in Procurement) and The Building Safety Act 2022 (BSA).
SSIP Meaning and Purpose
SSIP (Safety Schemes in Procurement) is an umbrella body for assessment schemes established to reduce both duplication and costs in health and safety assessments for both clients (also known as buyer-based organisations) and contractors (or suppliers).
By obtaining an SSIP accreditation, contractors fulfil the criteria for all SSIP member schemes, circumventing the need for multiple assessments and fees.
Below are some of the main organisations in the UK providing pre-qualification Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Schemes.
- CHAS
- Alcumus Safe Contractor
- Constructionline
- Acclaim

The Building Safety Act 2022 (BSA)
Following the tragedy at Grenfell Tower in June 2017 and other major building fire incidents, the new Building Safety Regulator (BSR) has been established in England to oversee the safe design, construction and occupation of higher-risk buildings (HRBs). Whilst the establishment of the BSR in England is intended to oversee a new, more stringent regime for HRBs, it also aims to drive improvements in building safety and performance in all buildings.
Duty holders are required to have the necessary skills, knowledge, experience and behaviours for the role, alongside any sector-specific competences.
Construction delays due to the new Building Safety Act 2022.
Building Safety Act (BSA) compliance is causing massive bottlenecks in the construction and property markets. Delays are primarily driven by the Building Safety Regulator (BSR) facing severe backlogs, critical staff shortages, and challenges from developers submitting incomplete applications.
In simple terms the new law has caught many organisations out because of a lack of understanding of the new law and not being sufficiently prepared.
SSIP delays due to the Building Safety Act 2022.
The Building Safety Act 2022 (BSA) sets rigorous new health and safety standards. This has caused SSIP (Safety Schemes in Procurement) certification delays because assessors require much higher evidence thresholds and strict compliance to documentation.
